We are in the middle of a teen epidemic according to many people who are serving kids at various levels including social psychologists, teachers, doctors and data from major universities. What has been acknowledged is that there's a profound gap in understanding around adolescent health. There is the agreement that the crisis is real and that there are a shocking amount of kids that are in terrible distress. Sadly, our healthcare system is not able to effectively respond to their needs. Dr. Mathew Biel, Chief of the division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Georgetown University states, "We don't have the infrastructure to deliver effective treatments." He advises how disconcerting the data that came from the CDC concerning adolescent mental health. He suggests the system doesn't have the bandwith to treat these troubled kids who are in terrible distress. "Emerging problems become entrenched problems. What were maneagable problems become very difficult clinical issues." He them states, "We are not getting to the kids fast enough and particularly alarming are the rates of suicidal thinking and depression amongst teenage girls who are bullied and experience sexual violence. Americans of all ages are struggling to feel connected, hopeful and purposeful. Many parents are feeling overwhelmed by fears about the future for themselves and their children. Emotional instability can easily be picked up by your child as teens don't live in a bubble. More thoughts on this in the next blog.
